Every year around this time, I dedicate a notes page in my planner for gift ideas—family members’ and friends’ names are written down alongside glorious blank space. If I’m walking around the downtown mall, out shopping, or think of stuff that they might like, it gets jotted down for future gift purchase and wrapping. We have a huge extended family—my dad’s one of 12—so organizing it all onto a piece of paper helps us remember if we’ve shopped for them or not!

The whole process is so much fun: thinking of a meaningful gift gets my creative juices flowing. Shopping for someone special is its own retail therapy, but better (and sometimes I I end up getting a little something-something for myself, ha!). Wrapping the present and personalizing a greeting card is icing on the cake! And now you must think I’m a little gift-crazy…

How to Think of the Ideal Gift

So, you’re ready to make your own list of gift ideas for friends and loved ones. Where to start? When brainstorming what to get for people, it can be helpful to start with a “theme” and narrow it down from there:

  • Will this be one gift or an assortment of presents?
  • Are you going to relate it to a hobby, something they’ve been eyeing the whole year, or maybe a more practical THING that they need?
  • Will it be tangible or involve quality time with you/other people?

If you’ve narrowed your gift theme down to “fitness”, I’m here to help! Male or female, friend or family member…these are my top gift picks for 2017:

  1. Spotify Gift Cards: Did you know that you can purchase Spotify gift cards? Mind. Blown. Spotify Premium is $9.99 per month, and wouldn’t it be nice for your giftee to not worry about Premium for ___ number of months?  Or maybe he/she has been meh about trying Premium, and now you have a chance to gift the gift of no ads and unlimited skips. Spotify Premium can be ESPECIALLY helpful for any group fitness instructors, yoga teachers, etc. to save them money on purchasing songs from iTunes each class.
  2. Perform Better Bands: These mini bands are great for workouts! I love using them to strengthen the muscles around my hips, for core work, and shoulder stability. Each color has varying resistance, and they’re really easy to pack along for travel.
  3. TRX Suspension System: The TRX is one of my favorite pieces of equipment for strength and circuit training. You can target literally every muscle of the body, all using their awesome suspension system. It’s a bit of an investment, but well worth it in the long run!
  4. Qalo Women’s Stackable rings (available for men, too): For the married people in your life (or those who exercise with style) who don’t want to scratch or ruin their wedding rings and bands, Qalo rings are pretty sweet! Strong and sturdy silicone bands are the perfect placeholder while you pick up and put down heavy things, and they come in fun colors and patterns.
  5. Plantronics Backbeat FIT Wireless Bluetooth Headphones: Out of all the wireless Bluetooth headphone options, what’s so different about this one? For one, the price isn’t as steep as other brands! The ear part isn’t bulky and fits into the ears comfortably. I get nervous wearing earbuds that are noise-canceling or seal off outside noise, and these have both great sound quality but allow me to hear surrounding noises, especially for outdoor activity. And finally – each charge gives you up to eight hours of listening!
  6. TriggerPoint MB5 Foam Massage Ball: I used this at a fitness conference this past spring, and immediately bought one after the workshop. The MB5 REALLY targets specific muscles for myofascial release, especially the harder-to-reach places like calves, hip flexors, and lats.

Not into the fitness gift ideas? Stay tuned, because I’m working on a gift guide for kitchen gadgets.
